The next international airport is Cancun. From Cancun you drive
4.5 hours on the highway to Chetumal/Bacalar. You can also take a domestic flight from Mexico City to Chetumal.
Bacalar, one of 35 "magic villages" of Mexico, a still very quiet place, is on the
shore of the wonderful fresh water Lagoon of 7 Colours which is known for its indescribable beauty. Its colours and the yearround warm water temperature invites us to relax completely. Directly
beside the lagoon you find the "Blue Hole", the "Cenote Azul". In the lagoon there are three more Cenotes which exchange their water with the lagoon. Here of course there are numerous possibilities
for boat tours and different water sport activities.
Only few years ago close to Bacalar Ichkabal was discovered, an archaeological
settlement with pyramids bigger than Chichen Itza. A small, already restored part of the site, should be opened for visitors very soon. In the closer surroundings of the Lagoon several smaller Mayan
pyramids are situated like Chacchobben, Kohunlich, Dzibanche and Kinichna.
An hour's drive will take you to the Caribbean Sea at the small village of
Mahahual and its reef where you can dive and snorkel. In 2.5 hours you arrive at the famous powder sugar beach of Tulum with its archaeological site, the only one which lies directly by the
Chetumal is half an hour away. There you can go for a walk on the nice "Malecón",
the promenade along the salt water bay, visit the highly recomended museum of Mayan culture, or go shopping in the big shopping mall of the Plaza las Americas, go to the airport, or go to see
manatees, large marine mammals which favor the bay and the nearby lagoons, or head by ferry to San Pedro Island in the neighbouring country of Belize that offers a very different ambience, or go
shopping for affordable purchases in the tax free trade zone on the Mexico / Belize bborder close by Chetumal.
